LIMITED EDITION SCULPTURE
GANDALFS RESCUE FROM ORTHANC
This sculpture captures the moment Gwaihir
the golden eagle, bearing Gandalf on his back, launches himself from the pinnacle of
Orthanc. Gandalf is shown at his passive and stoic best, accepting the fact that his
rescue and safety are now reliant on the efforts of this majestic eagle.
Gwaihir and Gandalf are sculpted in pewter and rest on a bonded porcelain base depicting
Orthanc. Every feather is individually carved and the sculpture is designed to balance
perfectly on the pinnacle of Orthanc, giving it the overall feeling of lightness.
This sculpture is limited to 500 pieces worldwide. The edition number for each sculpture
is inscribed on a pewter piece, located on the inner wall of the base.
Each piece will be accompanied by a brochure with information on the creation of the
sculpture as well as a certificate of authenticity.
A brief history of the moment
The sculpture is inspired by the following passage from The Fellowship of The Ring:
So it was that when summer waned, there came a night of moon, and Gwaihir the
Windlord, swiftest of the Great Eagles, came unlooked-for to Orthanc; and he found me
standing on the pinnacle. Then I spoke to him and he bore me away, before Saruman was
aware. I was far from Isengard, ere the wolves and orcs issued from the gate to pursue
me.
Gandalf was investigating the southern borders of the Hobbit shire because of feelings of
anxiety and a foreboding of some danger drawing him there. Whilst there he came across a
member of his order named Radagast the Brown, who told him that the Nazguls were about
seeking the Shire. He also said that it was Saruman the White, the greatest of the order,
who sent the message. Thinking that Saruman would help, Gandalf decided to visit him at
Orthanc. He also asked Radagast to Send out messages to all the beasts and birds
that are your friends. Tell them to bring news of anything that bears on this matter to
Saruman and Gandalf. Let messages be sent to Orthanc.
When Gandalf arrived at Orthanc, Saruman had him interned on the pinnacle of Orthanc.
