When the Ainur or Holy Ones came out of the
Timeless Halls they formed two groups – the Valar and
the Maiar. One of the Maiar was known above all others because of his great evil.
This was Sauron, the dark lord whose name means
abhorred. He was Chief Servant General and later successor to Melkor. When One Ring was
destroyed, Sauron lost all his power and his spirit was swept away.
